A husband who repeatedly teased in a movie because of his 49-year-old spouse Suzanne Morphew’s secure return times after she went missing Mother’s Day 2020 is now charged with first-degree murder in her death. Barry Morphew, 53, faces charges of murder, evidence tampering, and trying to influence a public servant just below a year after Suzanne disappeared. He was arrested on Wednesday.
Police held a press conference a 3 p.m. Mountain Time (5 pm EST) on Wednesday, but did not get into specifics concerning the case against Morphew.
Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze acknowledged that he did not know Suzanne Morphew personally before this evaluation, however, he said he knows that”those who knew her were very lucky.”
“I’ve learned that Suzanne loved her two brothers Mallory and Macy,” Spezze stated, including that Suzanne would do anything for her kids.
Spezze stated that Barry Morphew had been”taken into custody near his property.” Morphew was lonely in the time of the arrest and was taken into custody without incident. Spezze stated that authorities executed more than 135 research warrants and interviewed more than 400 people in numerous states.
In early April, the outcomes of the analysis have been presented to the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
DA Linda Stanley and her office analyzed the case and made the choice to proceed, ” the sheriff said.
“I know how deeply this case has affected our community,” Spezze explained.
DA Stanley also credited law enforcement for working day in and day out on this circumstance.
“They never quit,” she explained.
Stanley was asked by a reporter how the public may have confidence that there is a solid case against Barry Morphew if authorities won’t release the affidavit against him.
“I would not bring costs unless I was confident,” Stanley responded.
Barry Morphew is being held in the Chaffee County detention center, ” the sheriff said. Morphew is scheduled to appear in court Thursday in 10 a.m. Mountain Time. He has retained a lawyer.
Curious about the alleged cause of departure, DA Stanley explained:”with no body, we’d not be able to state that openly.”
“We believe that she’s not alive,” the sheriff added.
Stanley told frustrated reporters that her office would be putting out a news release that would include Morphew’s mugshot.
Investigators with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office said they first learned about the case on May 10, 2020 after a neighbor reported Suzanne Morphew missing. Morphew, a mother of 2 in Salida, went outside for a bike ride, but did not return. An investigation ensued and it was soon reported that authorities found Morphew’s bicycle.
On May 17, 2020,” Barry Morphew really appeared in a movie begging for Suzanne’s safe return.
“Oh Suzanne, if anybody is out there that can hear this, that has you, please, we’ll do whatever it takes to bring you back. We love you. We miss you. The girls want you. No questions asked. Yet much they need, I will do whatever it takes to get you back. Honey, I love you. I want you so awful,” he explained.
In light of those murder charges that were just handed down, this may remind a few of how Colorado man and convicted murderer Chris Watts responded after his pregnant spouse Shanann Watts along with his two brothers Bella, 4, along with Celeste, 3, have been reported lost.
“Shanann, Bella, Celeste… if you’re out there, just return,” Watts stated on the neighborhood news.
Bob Morphew, Barry Morphew’s uncle who resides in Indiana, told Fox 21 News from May 2020 that Suzanne was”one of the sweetest people you would ever wish to meet.” The uncle rejected the concept that his nephew might have played a role in her disappearance.
“I think they could spoil that type of notion,” he explained.
“They’re a loving couple and I’ve never seen any kind of unhappiness with each other or made by both of them,” Bob Morphew additional. “What you saw on that movie from Barry another day that’s exactly Barry and that’s exactly how he feels. He loves her and he wants her back, he wasn’t putting on. I think anybody that ever knew them at any moment in their wedded life would inform you that they had been loving of a couple as you would find anywhere.”
Back in Sept. 2020, allegations of foul play against Barry Morphew began to intensify.
Jeffrey Puckett, a man who was hired to do work for Morphew, advised Fox 21 News that a Holiday Inn room in Broomfield which Barry paid for him to stay in the weekend Suzanne disappeared reeked of”chlorine.”
“I got there Sunday night and the room smelled like chlorine real poor,” he explained. “It was his room and he had taken a shower his towels were all over the ground.”
Puckett said he also found mail addressed to Barry Morphew in a trash can inside the space.
As soon as I found the mail the morning after, just kinda looked to be an alibi,” Puckett said.
Barry Morphew denied that there was any foul play and stated that Puckett had done prison time previously.
“I didn’t do nothing wrong from the resort. There’s cameras around that place. I did nothing wrong,” Morphew said. He suggested the room may have weathered such as chlorine since the resort was taking additional cleaning precautions because of COVID-19.
“I smelled it too when I was in there,” he explained.
Puckett remembered Morphew leaving the resort in a Rush,
