Florida Teen Faces Potentially Considerable Prison Time After Allegedly Rigging Homecoming Queen Vote with Mother’s Help

A Florida teen and her mom stand accused of having a homecoming election last autumn. The two will probably be prosecuted as adults, neighborhood prosecutors told the media on Tuesday.
Emily Rose Grover, 18, was still a minor when she and her mom, Laura Rose Carroll, 50, allegedly hacked into the Escambia County School District’s internal computer program in order to match the outcome of October 2020 homecoming court vote.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) began exploring the episode in November 2020 following the school district reported unauthorized access into numerous student accounts.
The district supposes hundreds of votes as questionable after discovering that 117 votes had been cast in the exact same IP address within a brief time period. Grover allegedly cast those 117 votes to get herself through by way of an online voting system named Election Runner.
In total, FDLE investigators said they discovered that some 246 votes had been cast by the mother-daughter duo to secure the win.
Grover’s allegedly fraudulent ascension into Tate High School homecoming queen was assisted by her mum’s employment within the school district as an assistant chief in neighboring Bellview Elementary School, police said. Carroll, as a employee of the district, needed administrator-style accessibility to an online system used by pupils and parents at the Sunshine State. The FDLE claims that Carroll’s account FOCUS account credentials were used to get several 372 complete high school records-and 339 records belonging to Tate High School students-since August 2019.
Following the first discrepancies were noticed from the district, researchers said they found evidence linking”Carroll’s mobile phone as well as computers correlated with [the family’s] home” to numerous instances of unauthorized FOCUS account accessibility.
The would-be queen’s boasting also seemed to assist the investigative effort proceed, according to researchers.
“Multiple pupils reported the girl described using her mum’s FOCUS account to cast votes” the FDLE stated in a press release in the time of the group’s March arrest.
Local media outlet NorthEscambia.com obtained court records outlining some of the allegations made by nine pupils and teachers.
“I have understood that Emily Grover logs into her mothers school account in order to get grades and test scores since freshman year when we became friends,” one student told law enforcement. “She’s appeared [redacted] student ID prior to [redacted]. She knows that if she pulls into her mothers account at Tate it’ll stay that Laura Grover signed at Tate High School. She appears all of our group of friends grades and makes remarks about how she could find out our test scores all of the moment.”
Another statement stated:
When Emily Grover had been a sophomore [redacted] course, I remember times she photographed on her mothers focus account and publicly shared data, grades, schedule, etc., along with other individuals. She didn’t look like logging was a big deal and was very familiar with doing so.
Witnesses told investigators that these unauthorized access has occurred for about four years.
Details regarding the way Carroll and/or Grover were allegedly able to keep unauthorized access for many years without detection have yet to be made public. The FDLE simply noted that users of this FOCUS student data technology program”have been required to change their password every 45 days and [this ] Carroll’s annual training for its’Staff Responsible Use of Guidelines to Technology’ was up to date.”

Carroll and her daughter each face one count each of(1) offenses against users of all computers, computer programs, computer programs, and electronics; (2) unlawful use of a two-way communications device; (3) criminal usage of personally identifiable data; and (4) and conspiracy.
Since Grover, who turned 18 in April, is being prosecuted as an adult, they all face a statutory maximum 16 years .
Both are currently out on bail.
