A brief time afterwards Chaffee County, Colorado authorities provided their first media statements about the arrest of 53-year-old Barry Morphew from the alleged murder of his wife Suzanne Morphew, ” the sheriff’s office published the first picture of the suspect behind bars.
Suzanne Morphew, a 49-year-old mum of 2 in Salida, was reported missing by a neighbor on May 10, 2020 after she did not come home from a bike trip. This was Mother’s Day. Just seven days after that, the defendant sat down to capture some video pleading for his wife’s safe return.
“Oh Suzanne, if anyone is out there that can hear this, that has you, please, we will do anything it takes to bring you back. We adore you. We miss you. The girls need you. Yet much they want, I’ll do anything is needed to get you back. I would like you back so awful,” he said.
Now, just below a year after, Barry Morphew faces charges of murder that is senile, tampering with evidence, and trying to influence a public servant.
In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze stated Morphew was”taken into custody near his dwelling.” Morphew was alone at the time of his arrest and has been taken into custody without incident. Spezze thanked dozens of law enforcement officials from Chaffee County, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the FBI for their efforts in exploring this situation. Spezze stated that authorities executed over 135 research warrants and interviewed over 400 people in multiple countries.
In early Aprilthe outcome of the investigation were presented to the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
DA Linda Stanley and her office reviewed the situation and made the choice to move forward, ” the sheriff said.
“I know how deeply this situation has influenced our community,” Sheriff Spezze said.
DA Stanley also credited law enforcement for working day in and day out with this situation.
“They never quit,” she said.
Stanley was asked by a reporter how the public would have confidence that there is a powerful case against Barry Morphew if authorities wouldn’t release the affidavit against him.
“I wouldn’t bring costs unless I was confident,” Stanley responded.
Barry Morphew is being held at the Chaffee County detention facility, ” the sheriff said. He’s retained a lawyer.
Asked about the alleged source of departure, DA Stanley said:”Without the human body, we’d not be able to say that openly.”
“We believe [Suzanne] is not alive,” the sheriff added.
Reporters were frustrated by how little advice Stanley and Spezze supplied after this significant development from the yearlong case. Authorities promised a news release would soon follow that comprised a mugshot. That’s what happened. The information release replicated a lot of the Exact Same basic information that has been given at the presser:
He’s being held at the Chaffee County Detention Facility without bond. A mugshot of all Morphew is attached to this news release.
Morphew’s first court date is going to be the advisement where any bond discussions will be discovered. This hearing will be held at the Chaffee County Courthouse at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 6. The arrest warrant is closed currently.
The team has also investigated over 1,400 tips generated from inside and out law enforcement.
In Sept. 2020,” Jeffrey Puckett, a guy who was hired to perform contracting work for Barry Morphew, told Fox 21 News a Holiday Inn area in Broomfield — which Barry compensated for him to remain in the weekend Suzanne disappeared — reeked of”chlorine”
“I got there Sunday night and the room smelled like chlorine real awful,” he said. “It was his room and he’d taken a shower — his towels have been all over the floor.”
Puckett said he found mail addressed to Barry Morphew in a garbage can inside the area.
“My first idea was,’alibi.’ When I discovered the email the next morning, only kinda seemed to be an alibi,” Puckett said.
Barry Morphew denied there was any foul play and stated Puckett had done jail time previously.
“I did not do nothing wrong from the resort. There is cameras around that place. I did nothing wrong,” Morphew said. Then he indicated the room may have smelled like chlorine since the resort was taking additional cleaning precautions because of COVID-19.
“I smelled it also once I was in there,” he said.
Puckett recalled Morphew leaving the resort in a Rush,
