Michael Wayne Smith is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Cheyenne Johnson, also a 35-year-old Cottageville, West Virginia lady.
According to authorities, Johnson was last seen near Cottageville on Thursday, April 29. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said that it got a suggestion from a person who claimed to have overheard an individual talking about killing Johnson.
The tipster has been identified by WCHS as Virginia Smith, the defendant’s girlfriend.
The girl, apparently fearful of losing her kids, finally acknowledged she knew Michael Smith and knew in which Johnson’s body has been located.
From here, authorities interviewed the murder defendant and stated they extracted a confession. Smith allegedly confessed that he shot Johnson in the head with a rifle after a sort of dispute over a vehicle. Smith claimed Johnson stole his girlfriend’s vehicle on Thursday and came back to their own home with the car the following morning, before noon.
The defendant allegedly asserted that Johnson and his girlfriend had a bang that escalated into a knife attack. According to WHCS, Smith claimed he shot Johnson after in the head with a rifle after he failed to disarm her from the knife, then threw the girl’s body a well:
Michael Smith told the detective the argument escalated and Johnson pulled out a knife and began attacking Virginia Smith. The complaint said Michael Smith stated that he tried to find the knife away from Johnson numerous occasions and pushed struck to make her stop, but she kept coming after him. The complaint said that he told the detective that he then pulled a rifle in the car and took Johnson in the head, killing her.
Smith, an Alderson, West Virginia guy,”confessed to killing Cheyenne Johnson and dumping her body into a nearby hot water well,” that the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office stated.
“Mr. Smith was released from prison on April 15 and has been on parole,” authorities noted.
Following Johnson was reported lost over the weekend, Facebook users began sharing a picture urging anyone with information to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and also the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. Johnson was also a Jackson County resident. Her body had been found close to Sissonville, which can be currently in Kanawha County.
“The entire body located in the hot water well has been recovered and identified throughout tattoos belonging to Cheyenne Johnson. Additional confirmation will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner,” that the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office stated in an upgrade on Monday.
Deputies held a press conference on Monday to declare the significant development in the instance.
Jess Johnson, the victim’s father, stated in a Facebook article that Michael Smith is a”low life piece of garbage” and noticed that Smith had recently been released from prison.
“That is so hard for me personally, but I need everyone who messaged me love and type remarks, Cheyenne was located early this morning and as reported was murdered. The very low life piece of garbage that did so to my lovely daughter has been detained and back from prison, where he was released on the 15th of April. There was no motive for some of this,” he explained. “Now she’s with her sister and Mother and I hope they are rejoicing.”
In a post on Cheyenne Johnson’s Facebook page, Jess Johnson stated his daughter’s death soon followed the death of another loved one:”Cheyenne you’ve always been my Baby Girl. I can’t believe anyone could do what they did to you. You have been a sort soul, always ready to assist someone. It hasn’t been 5 months that we dropped Ciara. Now you will join your Mom and Sis in heaven. I expect it’s a wonderful reunion. I hope to join you all one day after my time here is over. Just know you are forever in my heart and my love for you has no end….RIP BABY GIRL…”
