A Republican state legislator in Kansas was detained on Thursday after allegedly kneeing a boy in the crotch while substitute teaching aboard a string of religious-based rants aimed in his students.
He has posted $1,000 bond and issued a set of social media articles to defend himself.
The incident happened on Wednesday when Samsel was substitute teaching in the Wellsville High School, about 45 minutes south west of Kansas City. Students reportedly filmed numerous videos of the Republican opining on a variety of topics including suicide, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, gender, lust, and faith.
The Star reviewed many of these videos — some of which have been shared on social media. In one such video, Samsel tells the class about”a sophomore who is attempted killing himself three times” allegedly because”he’s two parents and they are both females.”
The lawmaker’s anti-gay tirade continued on like this:
He’s a boost kid. His alternatives in life were having no parents or foster care parents that are homosexual. How can you believe I’m going to feel when he commits suicide? Awful.
“[M]ake babies,” Samsel instructs the students in another movie shared with all the socket by students’ parents. “Who likes making babies? That feels great, doesn’t it? Procreate… you have not masturbated? Do not answer that issue… God already knows.”
One male student supposedly got the brunt of all Samsel’s attention during these tirades, however, leading up to the lawmaker’s arrest.
The Star report from Sarah Ritter along with Jonathan Shorman notes:
Both Samsel and the student paced around the classroom, discussing back and forth. Samsel is shown following the student around and grabbing him. In 1 movie, he places his arms around the student and states that he had been tough on him.
At one point, Samsel tells the student,”You are going ready to anger and find the wrath of God. Do you believe me once I tell you that God has been talking to me?” Then he pushes himand the student runs on the other side of the classroom.
“You need to run and shout”
In another movie, he tells students,”Class, you have permission to kick him in the balls.”
Samsel reportedly spent a whole lot of time centered on the male student’s testicles.
Parents advised the socket that Samsel”put hands on the student” and kneed him in the crotch. A movie apparently recorded only after the attack shows the student on the ground whereas Samsel stands above him and asks”did it hurt?”
“[G]o to the nurse, then she is able to test it to you,” Samsel reportedly told the student after asking him why he is going to start crying. The legislator also apologizes to the student before requesting another student:”would you need to check his nuts for himplease?”
Samsel also allegedly forced students to go outside, hold handsand run errands as punishment for some kind of spiritual infraction.
The GOP representative, first picked in 2019, asserts the whole day was a performance art scene gone awry.
“Every little bit of this,” he explained in a Snapchat article. “That is ideal. The children and I planned ALL this to SEND A MESSAGE regarding artwork, mental health, adolescent suicide, how we handle our teachers and one another. To that? Parents. And grandparents. And all of Wellsville.”
“I went to jail for battery,” Samsel continuing. “Does that really make me a criminal? Time will tell.”
NBC affiliate KSNT-TV to express similar defenses.
Wellsville Superintendent Ryan Bradbury dealt with the controversy in comments to local CBS affiliate KCTV.
“[W]e immediately started an investigation and, as part of the analysis, contacted the appropriate bureaus,” Bradbury said on Friday.
“We want to be transparent but privacy laws prohibit us from doing that in this instance,” Bradbury said. “However, I will say the replacement instructor involved in this episode isn’t and won’t be arriving.”
